Social Media Image Sizes for Every Platform
The sizes you need most: an Instagram post is 1080 × 1440 (or 1080 × 1080 square), a YouTube thumbnail 1280 × 720 or larger at 16:9, a YouTube banner 2560 × 1440 and a LinkedIn banner 1584 × 396. Pick a platform below to preview the crop and resize your own image, free and in your browser.
Checked against the platforms’ own help pages on September 22, 2026; sources are listed under each platform.
Format
1080 × 1440 pxaspect 3:4
The largest a feed photo can be. Photos narrower than 320 px are enlarged to 320.
Your image stays on your device: it is previewed and resized in your browser and never uploaded. The download is center-cropped to fill the exact size.

Instagram Image Sizes
Instagram stores feed photos up to 1080 pixels wide and accepts any shape from 1.91:1 landscape to 3:4 portrait; anything outside that range is cropped. The 3:4 portrait is the tallest a feed post can be and matches the profile grid, which switched to 3:4 thumbnails in 2025. Older guides still quote 1080 × 1350 (4:5), which works but leaves space unused.
| Format | Upload size (px) | Aspect | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Feed post (portrait, 3:4) | 1080 × 1440 | 3:4 | The largest a feed photo can be. Photos narrower than 320 px are enlarged to 320. |
| Feed post (square) | 1080 × 1080 | 1:1 | Shows uncropped in the feed; the profile grid crops it to 3:4. |
| Feed post (landscape) | 1080 × 566 | 1.91:1 | 1.91:1 is the widest shape Instagram accepts without cropping. |
| Story | 1440 × 2560 | 9:16 | Meta’s recommended upload for 9:16 Stories (1080 × 1920 is the same shape). JPG or PNG up to 30 MB. Keep about 14% at the top and 35% at the bottom clear of text. |
| Reel (video) | 1080 × 1920 | 9:16 | Reels accept 1.91:1 to 9:16; use 9:16 at 720 px wide or more and at least 30 fps. |
| Reel cover | 420 × 654 | 1:1.56 | The cover cannot be changed after the Reel is posted, so set it before you share. |

Facebook Image Sizes
A Facebook Page needs a profile picture, a cover photo and images for posts and Stories. The cover is cropped to different shapes on computers and phones, and on mobile the profile picture overlaps its lower edge, so keep text and logos in the middle.
| Format | Upload size (px) | Aspect | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Page cover photo | 851 × 315 | 2.7:1 | Meta’s fastest-loading size (an sRGB JPG under 100 KB). Minimum 400 × 150. Use PNG if the cover has a logo or text. |
| Page profile picture | 320 × 320 | 1:1 | Displays at 176 × 176 on computers and 196 × 196 on phones, cropped to a circle. |
| Feed image (portrait, 4:5) | 1440 × 1800 | 4:5 | Meta’s recommended upload for feed images. JPG or PNG up to 30 MB; minimum 600 px wide. |
| Story | 1440 × 2560 | 9:16 | 9:16, up to 30 MB. Keep the top and bottom of the frame clear of text. |
| Shared link image | 1200 × 630 | 1.9:1 | The image a link preview shows. At least 1200 × 630 for high-resolution displays; minimum 200 × 200. |
| Group cover photo | 1640 × 856 | 1.92:1 | Phones hide the edges, so keep important content away from the sides. |

LinkedIn Image Sizes
LinkedIn uses different banner shapes for personal profiles and company pages, which is the most common mistake: a 1584 × 396 personal banner is not the same shape as a 1512 × 396 company cover. Many guides still quote 1128 × 191 for company covers; LinkedIn’s help page now says 1512 × 396.
| Format | Upload size (px) | Aspect | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Personal profile banner | 1584 × 396 | 4:1 | JPG or PNG under 8 MB. |
| Personal profile photo | 400 × 400 | 1:1 | At least 400 × 400, up to 7680 × 4320. PNG or JPG up to 8 MB; no GIFs. |
| Company page cover | 1512 × 396 | 3.82:1 | PNG or JPEG; all Page images up to 3 MB. |
| Company page logo | 400 × 400 | 1:1 | Minimum 268 × 268. |
| Feed image (landscape) | 1200 × 628 | 1.91:1 | JPG, PNG or GIF up to 5 MB. |
| Feed image (square) | 1200 × 1200 | 1:1 | JPG, PNG or GIF up to 5 MB. |
| Feed image (vertical, 4:5) | 720 × 900 | 4:5 | Takes the most room in a phone feed. |
| Article or newsletter cover | 1920 × 1080 | 16:9 | Newsletter logos are 300 × 300. |
| Event banner | 1280 × 720 | 16:9 | 16:9, at least 480 px wide. |

YouTube Image Sizes
YouTube channel art is shown on TVs, computers and phones, each cropping it differently, so only a strip in the middle is safe for text and logos. Profile pictures render at just 98 × 98 and YouTube doesn’t publish an upload size; a square of 800 × 800 or more gives room to spare.
| Format | Upload size (px) | Aspect | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Channel banner | 2560 × 1440 | 16:9 | Recommended for TVs; minimum 2048 × 1152, up to 6 MB. YouTube gives the safe area as 1235 × 338 at the minimum size, which scales to about 1546 × 423 here. Safe area: 1546 × 423. |
| Video thumbnail (HD) | 1280 × 720 | 16:9 | The common working size. Any 16:9 image at least 640 px wide works. JPG or PNG; 2 MB limit on mobile uploads, 50 MB on desktop. |
| Video thumbnail (4K) | 3840 × 2160 | 16:9 | The largest thumbnail YouTube accepts. |
| Shorts thumbnail | 2160 × 3840 | 9:16 | 9:16. Smaller images at the same shape work too. |
| Video watermark | 150 × 150 | 1:1 | At least 150 × 150, square, under 1 MB. A transparent PNG of your logo mark works best. |

X (Twitter) Image Sizes
X has two branding images: a square profile photo and a wide header. The header can lose up to 60 px at the top and bottom, and the profile photo overlaps its lower-left corner. X’s help pages could not be loaded when we checked; these sizes match X’s help-page summary and two 2026 industry guides.
| Format | Upload size (px) | Aspect | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Header | 1500 × 500 | 3:1 | Keep text away from the lower-left corner, where the profile photo sits. Safe area: 1500 × 380. |
| Profile photo | 400 × 400 | 1:1 | JPG, GIF or PNG; animated GIFs are not supported. |

TikTok Image Sizes
TikTok is vertical video first. Film and export at 9:16; wider formats are accepted but appear with bars or cropped in the For You feed. TikTok does not publish a profile photo size for regular accounts.
| Format | Upload size (px) | Aspect | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Video (vertical) | 1080 × 1920 | 9:16 | TikTok’s specs call for 9:16 at 540 × 960 or larger. MP4 or MOV, up to 500 MB for ads. |
| Video (square) | 1080 × 1080 | 1:1 | Accepted at 640 × 640 or larger, but it fills less of the screen. |

Pinterest Image Sizes
Pinterest is a tall-image platform: a 2:3 pin takes up more of the feed than a square one without being cut off. Your profile also has a wide cover image that sits above your boards.
| Format | Upload size (px) | Aspect | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard pin | 1000 × 1500 | 2:3 | PNG or JPEG, up to 20 MB on desktop and 32 MB in the app. |
| Video pin | 1080 × 1920 | 9:16 | 9:16, between 4 seconds and 5 minutes. |
| Profile cover | 1920 × 1080 | 16:9 | Pinterest asks for 16:9 at least 800 × 450; a larger image stays sharp. |

Four Rules That Matter More Than the Exact Pixels
Getting the dimensions right stops your images from being cropped or blurred. These four habits are what make the result look professional.
Profile pictures are circles
Almost every platform crops the profile picture to a circle and shows it tiny, often under 50 pixels in comments and feeds. A full logo with a wordmark becomes unreadable. Use your logo mark or initials, centered, with space around it, on a solid brand color.
Banners crop differently on phones
Cover and banner images are cropped to different shapes on desktop, mobile and TV, and profile pictures sit on top of them. Keep text and logos in the center and treat the outer edges as decoration that may disappear.
Upload at the recommended size, not the minimum
Platforms compress everything you upload. Starting from the recommended size, or larger at the same shape, gives the compression more to work with. Use PNG for logos and text-heavy graphics, JPG for photos.
One look across every profile
The same profile picture, colors and fonts everywhere is what makes people recognize you as they move between apps. Make every banner from one template in your brand colors rather than designing each from scratch.
For a platform-by-platform setup list, use the social profile branding checklist, and see the social media branding hub for every platform guide.
Start With a Logo That Works Small
The profile picture is the one image people see on every platform, over and over, at the size of a fingertip. It needs a logo that still reads at 40 pixels, in a version that works on both light and dark backgrounds, and a brand color to sit behind it.
Magnt generates 3 logo concepts in about 60 seconds. You pick one and get it as high-res PNG files, including transparent and reversed versions, plus a 5-color palette with HEX codes, a font pairing and a brand summary PDF. Drop the transparent logo onto your brand color, resize it here for each platform, and every profile matches. One-time $19.
Frequently Asked Questions
What size is an Instagram post?
Instagram stores feed photos up to 1080 pixels wide and accepts any shape from 1.91:1 landscape (1080 × 566) to 3:4 portrait (1080 × 1440); a square post is 1080 × 1080. The 3:4 portrait takes up the most space and matches the profile grid, which switched to 3:4 thumbnails in 2025. The older 4:5 size, 1080 × 1350, still works.
What size is a YouTube thumbnail?
Use a 16:9 image at least 640 pixels wide. 1280 × 720 is the common size, and YouTube accepts up to 3840 × 2160. JPG or PNG; the limit is 2 MB when uploading from a phone and 50 MB from a computer. Keep any text large enough to read on a phone.
What size is a YouTube banner?
Upload channel art at 2560 × 1440 pixels (the minimum is 2048 × 1152, up to 6 MB). Only a strip in the middle shows on every device: 1235 × 338 at the minimum size, or about 1546 × 423 at 2560 × 1440. Keep your logo and any text inside it.
What is the LinkedIn banner size?
A personal profile banner is 1584 × 396 pixels (4:1). A company page cover is 1512 × 396, according to LinkedIn’s help page; many guides still quote the older 1128 × 191. Design each separately rather than reusing one image.
What size should a profile picture be?
Upload a square image of at least 400 × 400 pixels. That meets LinkedIn’s minimum and is larger than Facebook’s 320 × 320; X uses 400 × 400. Profile pictures are cropped to a circle and shown small (YouTube renders them at 98 × 98), so use a simple logo mark with space around it.
Do these sizes change?
Yes. Platforms change layouts every year or two. Figures on this page were checked against the platforms’ own help pages on the date shown at the top, with sources under each platform. The one exception is X, whose help pages could not be loaded; its sizes come from two current industry guides. If a platform’s help page says something different, follow the platform.
Is the image resizer free and private?
Yes. It runs entirely in your browser: your image is never uploaded to a server. Pick a format, choose an image, check the crop preview and download a PNG at the exact size.
